Starting and Training the Young Horse

Picture

Guy believes the first 60 days of any training program should be fundamentally the same no matter what discipline the horse will eventually pursue. The ultimate objective being to produce a soft, willing, confident and respectful partner.

To achieve this objective Guy focuses on establishing a strong foundation, first on the ground and then under saddle, forging a mutual and respectful relationship between horse and rider. Guy believes that this approach is essential in enabling the horse to effectively learn, and it is this principle that underlies his entire training program.

Guy’s program revolves around gaining the horses respect and building confidence in him.  All work starts on the ground in the round pen and then moves to the arena. He is quick to move the horse outside of the arena and expose them to as much as possible once he is happy with the control and confidence he has established.

Guy’s relaxed, low stress approach ensures that horses within his program get the very best possible start, no matter what they go on to do.

The Training program will cover:

Picture
·        Ground work
·        Tying up
·        Picking up of feet and shoeing preparation
·        Introduction to the snaffle
·        Saddling
·        Ridden
·        Manners when handling on the ground
·        Riding at all gaits
·        Riding outside
·        Introduction to small jumps
·        Riding over and around obstacles
·        Hacking out alone and in company
·        Trailer loading

Foals and weanling handling is individually tailored and can give a young horse or foal the preparation for the future to assist with basic veterinary treatment then later the starting under saddle.

All horses learn at different paces and in different ways, as a guideline we say 6 weeks to start a young horse under saddle.

Horses in training are charged at £160 per week, (this is inclusive of full livery)

Horses are worked Monday to Saturday having a rest day on Sunday.

Retraining and Problem Solving

Picture

Guy has worked with all kinds of problems including kicking, pulling back, trailer loading, can’t catch, bucking, rearing, biting, throwing themselves on the floor, running backwards, won’t stand for the farrier, can’t bridle and the list goes on.

Guy believes that with every problem there is a root cause and in order to try and overcome the problem this root cause must be identified.

Guy likes to work with the horse first and then the horse and rider in order to try and overcome the problem so that both horse and rider are able to move forward and enjoy one and other once more.
